Lost in Translation: The Coded Language of the Opioid Crisis

In this short documentary MING Media’s Richard Patterson explores the coded language used to address the opioid epidemic and the racial inequalities in awareness and access to treatment in the African-American community. In contrast to the language used to discuss the crack epidemic of the 80s and 90s, Patterson asks, “Why is the opioid crisis treated as a public health issue when crack was treated as a criminal justice issue?” The film reveals how the opioid crisis affects Richard’s own North Philadelphia neighborhood including active users, people in recovery, and people who’ve lost loved ones to opioid addiction. The short film screening will be followed by a panel discussion, Q & A, and a breakout design session.
