Pregnant, Parenting and Incarcerated: Advocating for Philadelphia’s Mothers in the Criminal Justice System

The number of incarcerated women in the U.S. increased by more than 700 percent over the last two decades. Eighty percent of those women are mothers, and most are their children’s primary caretakers. Since 2006 Maternity Care Coalition has worked in partnership with the Philadelphia Department of Prisons to provide comprehensive strengths-based case management services to support Philadelphia’s incarcerated and re-entering moms and families.

This panel will explore both Maternity Care Coalition’s approach to providing services for pregnant and parenting women experiencing incarceration as well as MCC’s efforts to challenge the systemic and persistent inequalities faced by women impacted by the criminal justice system.
